Islamabad: Former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has submitted the names of 14 members to the Speaker of the National Assembly for participation in the special in-camera meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on National Security.
The PTI members attending the meeting include Chairman Barrister Gohar, Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Omar Ayub, Asad Qaiser, Zartaj Gul, Amir Dogar, Leader of the Opposition in the Senate Shibli Faraz, and Senator Ali Zafar.
The National Security Committee’s in-camera session is scheduled for Tuesday at 11:00 AM in the National Assembly Hall, where a briefing on the security situation will be provided.
According to the National Assembly spokesperson, military leadership will brief the parliamentary committee on the current security situation in the country. Representatives from all political parties in Parliament, including their designated members, will participate in the meeting.
Strict and extraordinary security measures have been implemented for the session. The National Assembly spokesperson stated that unauthorized individuals would not be allowed entry, and all entry passes, including those for the media, have been temporarily deactivated.
Furthermore, photography, videography, and recording within the parliamentary premises during the meeting are strictly prohibited. The spokesperson acknowledged the importance of the media but urged all stakeholders to cooperate in the interest of national security.
It is worth mentioning that on April 7, 2023, a National Security Council meeting was held at the Prime Minister’s House, where a new comprehensive counter-terrorism operation was approved.
The meeting was attended by federal ministers, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, service chiefs, and senior officials from relevant institutions.
According to the official statement issued after the meeting, the forum acknowledged the sacrifices and efforts of security forces to ensure lasting peace in the country. It reaffirmed its commitment to eradicating terrorism from Pakistan.
The statement further noted that the recent wave of terrorism was a result of leniency and an ill-conceived policy towards the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). It highlighted that not only were terrorists allowed to return without restrictions, but several dangerous TTP operatives were also released from prisons as part of confidence-building measures.
